I'm not sure how I feel about the Decemberists. When they're on, they're on. Some of their songs blow me away - July, July, Song for Myla Goldaberg, Sunshine, most of the track on Picaresque. The new album hasn't done a thing for me. I had a leaked copy, listened to it once, and when tha album actually came out I purchased it and heard half on the way home, but I haven't listened to it since...

I feel like everyone I know has had this same feeling... except me. The descriptions feel, a lot of the time, like how *I* feel about Death Cab For Cutie - they found an audience that wasn't me... but The Decemberists are still, to my ear, much the same band they were. Sure their fanbase annoys me now, but I try never to let a band's fans stop me from enjoying their music... it's not the band's fault everyone came around to the joys of over-educated nerd pop [smirk].

Anyways - not saying you're wrong (it's an opinion, obviously) - but I just don't see/hear it in their music (and The Crane Wife is awesome... [GRIN])

My 2¢ anyways...
