Leeds and Oliver! at The Leeds Playhouse

I saw a tweet from Sam West praising the new Leeds Playhouse production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! and since…

  • I love (most of) the songs.
  • I love the 1968 film.
  • I’ve never seen it on stage (not counting a very cut-down version Adam’s class did in primary school).
  • Leeds is only 90 mins from Newcastle on the train.

… I tempted Hazel with a night in a budget hotel in Leeds and all the food we invariably eat on our city excursions. So off we went.

It’s a great musical and it was great to finally see it on a stage. It was staged in the round with the cast/crew wheeling the props on and off the stage during the performance. The cast were fine and the singing was great. BUT… no matter how big those big production numbers were they weren’t (and of course couldn’t be) as big as the film versions, and I know the film so well.

This was our first visit to Leeds since we visited for a Luna show in 2015 and we only had a few hours before the show, and a few hours the following morning and it mostly left us with a desire to come back and spend a bit more time there. Which we will.

There are a few pictures on Flickr but the wind and crap phone battery life meant I didn’t take that many! This is the sort of thing that had us wanting to go back…
