Carter Beats The Devil - Glen David Gold

A cracking yarn - OK I love a bit of magic and I love a bit of romance and I love a twisty plot and I love a period piece - there really was nothing not to love about this book. Charles Carter uses US president Harding as a stooge in a gloriously grisly illusion - the next day the president is dead and Carter is making an escape…

A ripping tale ensues and kept me gripped to the very end. Highly recommended

Best ever IMDB Trivia

Posted on August 20th, 2004 by Andy

The TV camera used in the scene where Bob appears on the Japanese show is an Ikegami HK-388W with a Fujinon Ah24x lens, mounted on a Vinten Vector 700 pan and tilt head - typical studio equipment.

Jesus whoever contributed that really really needs to get out more…

If this is freedom I don’t want any part of it

Adam’s been away visiting my sister and her family for a couple of days - you’d have thought that this would be a relief but the house is so empty and quiet without him.

Hazel and I took the advantage of this “freedom” to go and catch a couple of films at the Riverside last night. Lost in Translation I enjoyed, the slow paced film set in a fast paced city was really nicely done - and having The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine on the soundtrack is pretty much enough to outweigh the worrying concerns of racial stereotyping that the film gave me.

The Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind was even better - I hadn’t heard anything about the film which made it’s unusual-ness so much more enjoyable. Another love story - I’m such a sop.

20000 Leagues under the sea by Jules Vernes

Posted on March 11th, 2004 by Andy

I decided 2004 would be the year I started reading again. I love the idea of Jules Vernes fantastic novels and I loved the film of Journey to The Center of the Earth, so I thought I’d give 20000 leagues a shot.

I must admit to being a little disappointed. The novel was very technical with great swathes of text dedicated to over long descriptions of the undersea flora and fauna. The real adventures came in fits and starts. I guess that the way the story was told made it so much more believable and I see why it’s a classic - not because it’s exciting but because it feels so real.

The first encounter with the Nautilus, being trapped in an iceberg at the South Pole and the battle with the giant squid were all edge of the seat stuff. The enigma that is Nemo was also beautifully told. I think my disappointment is in it not being what I had expected.
