If I ever were to get a band together I’d definitely do a cover of Jezebel because, as this collection proves, it is actually impossible to do anything but a brilliant version

If ever a pair of eyes, promised paradise, deceiving me, grieving me, leaving me blue… Jezebel, it was you

Harpo Marx – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

[Harpo] Marx was also an avid croquet player, and was inducted into the Croquet Hall of Fame in 1979.

And from the United States Croquet Association website:

Arthur “Harpo” Marx was a lovable, eager and very athletic croqueteer. Whenever he returned to Long Island or to Alexander Woollcott’s island on Lake Bomoseen in the summer. Usually clad only in the briefest of trunks, (even when others were in flannels) Harpo would just bound around the court, laughing and stretching, mouth full of an entire pack of gum.

And…

Your search – site:britannica.com harpo croquet – did not match any documents.

Harpo was the Marx Brother I loves as a kid, he was the clown and you didn’t need to worry about listening to the words to find his humour… but I have to say that when he played his harp… I’d sort of lose interest – Chico’s piano playing never did that.

Now I’m more grown up and I get Jojo’s appreciation!

Today is a beautiful day… but mostly I’m stuck at work. I just sat in the garden over lunch and listened to The Comforts of Madness by Pale Saints – an album that takes me away from where I am and puts me in a much better place. Like many I suspect my first introduction to Pale Saints was on SnubTV.

I saw them a few times including one last time at the ICA after Ian had left… they were still not bad (although arguably not Pale Saints).

I was absolutely sure there were tons of songs with sirens at the beginning so I thought that was ripe for a playlist – while that may be true, tracking them down turned out to be tricky but I managed to rustle up enough (with help!) for a “my top 6″ post.

First up obviously (well it was obvious to me)…

The Sweet – Blockbuster

The Clash – White Riot (thanks to Harvey for pointing me at this one)

Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Two Tribes (thanks to Jim for this one)

The Ruts – Babylon’s Burning

Girlschool – Demolition Boys (sadly no clip of the album version with the siren so you’ll have to imagine it… this is a great clip though).

13th Floor Elevators – Fire Engine

Slade – Coz I Luv You

The Sweet – Blockbuster

T-Rex – Jeepster

Mott The Hoople – Roll Away The Stone

David Bowie – Life on Mars
